A chic shade of red
I have never had a professional manicure. I always walk past this one nail salon before and after work but spending €15 on a manicure that will undoubtedly last me only a few days (clumsy as I am), seems a bit outrageous. But practice makes perfect and it seems as though I do a pretty good job myself as of late. I only allow myself to wear two shades of nail polish; Mademoiselle and Wicked, both by Essie. Mademoiselle is a classic sheer pink suitable for all occassions while Wicked is a very chic deep and dark red. The latter is also a perfect dupe for Chanel’s Rouge Noir. And in case you’re wondering, I never wear my nails longer than this, but I try to take care of them using the Clear nails plus | tophealthjournal treatment. While I do admire longer nails on others, the look isn’t for me. But I find as long as your hands look well cared for, it doesn’t really matter how long your nails are.
I too feel like spending money on a manicure is a bit too much, especially when 1) I can do mine pretty well, 2) I don’t like to wear nail polish constantly (I like to leave my nails breathe in between 2 manis). I also love to keep my nails short. I feel that they are more practical this way and stay cleaner longer. I do love that Wicked color you chose! Will have to see if I can track it down here!
Short nails are so much easier. I sit behind a computer a large part of the day, I can’t imagine typing with long nails.
Couldn’t agree more, Jessica!
I’ve never been for a manicure (even though I’m not very good at doing nails myself!) This is a beautiful colour, so perfect for this time of year. Essie does the best shades! x

Can i ask why you say you only “allow” yourself? Is there a reason for such a thought? It maybe sounds a little harsh to yourself!
It probably sounds more harsh than it is. There are so many beautiful colors out there so it’s tempting to buy more. But I’m actually trying to buy less and be happy with what I already own. With these two colours I feel like I have enough variety 🙂
My favorite pale pink is OPI’s “Mimosas for Mr. and Mrs,” which looks like it is likely a little less sheer than Mademoiselle. A friend introduced me to it when I was the bridesmaid for her wedding: It was one of our nail colors.
I had a bit of a nail polish phase about two years ago and bought what felt, to me, like a lot of colors, and I tried to get a lot of wear out of them (doing my nails about 2x a week, as I get only about 2-3 days of wear max out of my own manicures). It didn’t end up being a great choice for me, as my nails were starting to show the wear and tear, and I found I don’t actually enjoying doing my nails that much. I probably only “need” to own 2-3 nail colors at a time (and each bottle would last forever). I would, however, also keep a base coat and a top coat around, which means having ~five bottle of nail products around.
Oh I like that color as well. I never use a base coat and a top coat *shame*. I don’t have the patience for it and I get about 5-6 days of wear out of it. So either Essie’s quality is amazing or I’m super careful (or a combination of both of course). The craziest color I ever purchased was a dupe for Chanel’s Nouvelle Vague, a bright turquoise color. Not a good look on me, I’m afraid 😀
That looks great! My collection of nail polish is a bit bigger at the moment, so I am trying to downsize it, so I don’t end up with too many.
I haven’t tried the professional mani or pedi yet either, but I think a pedi would be great for spring.
To be honest with you, I secretly want to get a professional manicure of pedicure done, just once. To see how it turns out and maybe steal some handy tricks 😉
