Oldies But Goodies Part I
The Isabel Marant Etoile jacketI thought it would be nice to write more about my wardrobe. Not the new purchases but the old tried and loved items that I have had for years. This jacket is one of them. I bought it through Ebay in 2010, just before the Isabel Marant craze started. At the time, the brand was hard to find here in the Netherlands so I had to try my luck in other countries or on Ebay. They probably sell for less than €100 on Vestiaire Collective right now but I bought it for a good price anyway. It was as good as new.
Back in 2010 I used to be a museum docent and felt so awkward whenever a student was wearing the same garment. So my mission was to find clothing that looked sharp but not overdone and also not so common. It turned out more versatile than I expected and it’s a great alternative for the traditional blazer. I suppose it’s a hybrid between a blazer and a cardigan? I’m able to dress it up and/or down, for day and night. I’m pretty sure I even went to a hardcore punk show in this jacket once LOL.
As I hate doing outfits photos, here’s an old picture of me wearing it. The strong shoulders are something I look for in any jacket or blazer. My hips are a little wider than my shoulders (yep, I’m a pear), so this balances everything out. What I especially like though, is the length of the sleeves. Usually they’re much too long on me but these fit perfectly. I know I have written before that you should buy and keep clothes for the body that you have right now but I’m happy that I held onto this jacket when I gained some weight. It took me a while to lose it but I can finally wear it again.
Isabel Marant jacket, Topshop straight jeans, H&M t-shirt, G.H. Bass Weejun loafers, Balenciaga City bag
It’s funny that I mostly wear it the same way as I did when I first received it 8 years ago. With a pair of black jeans and a white t-shirt to keep it somewhat casual. Otherwise it feels too formal for my taste. I’m quite particular about which t-shirt I wear underneath because of the neckline of the jacket. It shouldn’t be visible if I wear the jacket closed. Also, it’s needs to be a solid white. The jacket already has structure and different hues so the rest of the outfit needs to stay simple. On trend? Probably not. But it makes me feel put together and comfortable and that’s all I need.
What’s the oldest piece of clothing in your wardrobe?
I was getting tired of writing about new purchases and wish lists all the time so I wanted to try something different and focus more on the things that I already own and appreciate. I hope you enjoy reading about this as well.
What a wonderful series ! Yes ! I am tired of watching wish lists and a parade of never ending goods monthly/weekly. I will wait for the next installment of it. ( I would like to do this on my blog too. )
My oldest garment is a black t-shirt from Victoria Secret. I bought it on the day I landed in America. Its one of those long sleeved thick cotton ones that they no longer make in favor of jersey/paper thin shirts. I use it for layering under sweaters during winter. It looks indestructible after all these years.
Thanks! I’m sure I can’t resist the occasional wish list but with this series I wanted to emphasize that I’m also extremely happy with the things that I own right now. Even the items that have been with me for 5+ years. As a matter of fact, once I started to take pictures and write about these pieces of clothing I couldn’t wait to wear them again. I would love to read about your ‘oldies but goodies’!
Victoria’s Secret, who would have thought that they made such indestructible clothes? Quality long sleeves are a must for me. I also use them for layering all through winter. When did you move to the US?
My oldest garment is a t-shirt I bought at Musee Picasso in 1993 (my high school trip!). It’s white and has a close up portion of Guernica on the front. I wore it as part of my “regular” wardrobe for years, probably a decade, until it began to yellow. Since then it’s been in my gym drawer, and I probably wear it every other week or so to work out. It has to have been washed hundreds of times and although the image is faded, somehow the cotton tee has never worn down. They definitely don’t make t-shirts like that anymore; I usually buy a couple of basic white tees every year because I wear them often in the summer and they just fall apart – regardless of price.
For regular street clothes, I have a denim skirt from Gap that’s roughly 10-12 years old that still gets weekly wear in the summer months. I have half-heartedly looked for a replacement in recent years (it’s bound to fall apart eventually), but can’t find anything I like.
Wow, 1993! Your t-shirt sounds lovely though. It’s such a beautiful piece of art, Guernica. I love the feeling of those thick cotton t-shirts. I thought I found one two years ago but alas, after a few washes it looked horrible. I’ve just given up and like you, buy a few random basic white tees every year. Well, except when I can grab an Isabel Marant t-shirt on sale. Those are worth the price.
What are you looking for in a new denim skirt?
My unicorn denim skirt would fall just above the knee, and it would be a loose-fitting but straight shape (vs. an A-line). The length is so hard to describe! Not mini, not midi. My Gap skirt is a lighter wash, and I’d prefer something medium-dark this time. Also I’d like to avoid having a vent or slit, neither in the front nor the back. (That’s why I want it to be slightly loose fitting).
I think I might have to settle for eventually purchasing a denim pencil skirt 1-2 sizes too big, have the length taken up and then wear it low on my hips.
My oldest garment is a lavender ottoman jacket from american apparel. It’s about 9 years old. I don’t wear it very often, maybe only once every few months, and it’s slightly out of my comfort zone, but I’ve kept it around because it feels special. And since american apparel has gone out of business for better or worse, the rarity of it makes me want to hold on to it more.
I would love to see your jacket. Can I find it on your blog? I also have a few pieces that I’m really attached to. I don’t even wear them anymore because they’re too small. I’ll get to the point of letting them go one day but for now I enjoy the memories whenever I see them hanging in my closet.
That jacket is great! I definitely have held onto some pieces for quite a long time, but I can’t think of any of them that I actually wear on a regular basis, which is probably a sign.
– D
Thanks! I also still have a few things that I don’t wear anymore but are hard to let go off. Such as my graduation dress which I no longer fit.
Most the old items (at least 10 years) in my closet are jeans, everything else that’s still in regular rotation is pretty new, 3-4 years old on average. Strangely I have very little that made it to the 7-8 year mark – I think a lot of what I bought in 2009-12 have either worn out (lots of it was Zara stuff I got tired of repairing) or I outgrew the style.
I wonder if the clothes I bought from 2013-present will last longer in my wardrobe. I feel like I go through a bit of style epiphany every 4-5 years or so and outgrow certain items I thought were once staples, like ballet flats.
That jacket doesn’t seemed dated at all, even if isn’t the kind of style being marketed at trendy at the moment. You could walk into any place now and someone will still think, “great jacket”.
I’m sure if I was the same size as 10 years ago, I would still own a few pairs of jeans as well. Is it me or did the quality of jeans really go downhill over the years? I’m sure it also depends on the brand but still, I go through them very quickly. I had a pair of Zara jeans for 6 years which were still very decent looking even though I wore them at least two times a week. They would never last that long now.
Oh, and I agree with you on the ballet flats. Around 2005-2008 I definitely considered them staples. Then I saw pictures of myself and realised they made my legs look even shorter than they are. So that was the end of that, haha.
The oldest clothing item I’ve kept is probably my prom dress…I’ve been meaning to donate it for ages, and I think I have to push myself to just do it this year. FYI, it’s been almost 9 years since I wore it to my prom …so it’s quite embarrassing that I still have it in my closet. The item that is more wearable is a trench coat that I bought from Old Navy when I first started college. It’s not the most well made but because it’s so classic and there’s nothing clearly bad about it, I’ve kept it because of how much of a wardrobe “staple” it is. I’m not sure I have found the perfect trench for me yet so I think it’s a constant reminder to not settle and to be patient in finding the one.
I love your blog, btw! I am also trying to make my wardrobe more curated and functional, and I have to agree with you. It’s a work in progress and definitely a journey.
No, not embarrassing at all. One of my graduation dresses is still hanging in my closet and that particular graduation was in 2006. So don’t feel bad about it. It can be nice to hold onto a few tangible memories. Ah, the perfect trench coat… I love my trench coat and also have a backup which I found second hand online but there are so many different versions that it’s sometimes hard to resist another one.
Thank you btw, I appreciate it 🙂
My oldest piece is a eyelet top by H&M I bought 15 years ago, when I was just 15. I still wear it pretty regularly in the summer and it has somehow not yellowed. It’s really well-made! I wonder when the quality drop in H&M clothes started to accelerate. I haven’t bought anything from them in a couple of years but whenever I see a piece “in the wild” it looks really cheap.
15 years, H&M? That’s a long time! I still buy from them occasionally. I like the quality of the Trend line (with the pink label). As the name suggests, it’s very ‘on trend’ but they do some classic pieces as well. I particularly like the blazers.
This is such a great series. I definitely appreciate you reflecting on older pieces in your wardrobe and look forward to hearing about more.
My older pieces are a pair of brogues and a classic denim jacket, both around 8-10 years old. The brogues have been resoled 3 times now and I just painted the cream middle part black as I wanted a pair of black brogues! I hope for a final season out of them.
Thank you so much. While it’s fun to create wish lists and write about new purchases, it’s also nice to reflect on your existing wardrobe. I’m already planning a few other posts.
To be honest, I didn’t even know you could paint your shoes. It never crossed my mind. But it sounds like an excellent idea! Why buy a new pair if you can make it work this way 🙂
The other day, while I was at work, my sister stole my iphone and tested to see if it
can survive a thirty foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My
iPad is now broken and she has 83 views. I know this is entirely off topic but I had to share it with someone!
My brother recommended I might like this blog. He was entirely right.
This post truly made my day. You can not imagine just how much time I had spent for this information! Thanks!

I believe what you typed made a bunch of sense. But, think about this, suppose you added a
little content? I am not suggesting your content isn’t
good, but what if you added a title to maybe grab
people’s attention? I mean Oldies But Goodies Part
I is kinda boring. You might glance at Yahoo’s home page
and watch how they create article titles to get
viewers interested. You might try adding a video or a related picture or two to grab readers
excited about what you’ve got to say. In my opinion, it would
bring your posts a little livelier.
Thanks for another great post. Where else could
anybody get that kind of information in such an ideal manner of writing?
I’ve a presentation next week, and I’m on the search for
such information.
